Project Delta was created by Engineers for a Sustainable World - UTEP (ESW - UTEP) to evaluate and enhance the University of Texas at El Paso’s (UTEP) current recycling system. This is a two year project that began on February 2017 and is expected to be finalized by December 2018. Project Delta consists of three phases: Project Definition, Design, and Implementation Phases. For the Project Definition Phase, ESW - UTEP quantified data by conducting surveys, meeting with UTEP building managers, and extracting statistical data from campus buildings’ recycling systems. The Design Phase started with the Eco-Hackathon event that took place on April 21st to the 23rd 2017 at UTEP. This event engaged students in a team based competition to design a mobile app or software that encourages recycling awareness. Based on the assessment from the Evaluation and Design Phases, the Implementation Phase began in Fall 2017 semester by executing a recycling campaign on campus in collaboration with the Campus Sustainability Department.
