ESW Programs & Initiatives

Campus Sustainability

Awareness building is one of the core pieces of ESW's mission. By raising awareness of sustainability issues within the profession and raising public understanding of engineering contributions, we can all - engineers and non-engineers alike - build a better world using engineering solutions. ESW collegiate chapters have coordinated public outreach initiatives by organizing their members to speak to local non-campus or non-engineering groups, and by co-sponsoring events with local organizations.

Engineering Education

ESW collegiate chapters at world-class institutions are shaping engineering education for future generations of students. Through the dedicated efforts of our faculty and student members, ESW is integrating sustainability, international awareness, and community development into the engineering curriculum across the country. Our chapters have initiated sustainability courses at many campuses, including Cornell, Northwestern, Stanford, The University of Iowa and more.

National Initiatives

Education Resource Center. This online portal has educational resources developed by ESW and non-ESW faculty and students. The Education Resource Center includes directories of sustainable engineering courses, graduate and certificate programs in sustainable engineering, call for papers for academic publications and conferences, and seminars and workshops.

Annual National Conference. Each year, at ESW's National Conference, engineering educators from across the country are invited to present models for integrating sustainability into higher education.

Chapter Initiatives

Creation of new courses. New courses at the undergraduate and graduate level integrate community development, ethics, and engineering design. Courses often include a laboratory, or project component, enabling students to gain critical hands-on experience.

Integration of community development into senior and graduate-level design. Existing courses are being shaped to address global development challenges. ESW serves as a clearinghouse for educational resources, project partners, and funding opportunities.

SEED Program

Each summer, students and young professionals work on sustainable development projects abroad with NGOs and universities that are local to the project site. Partnerships with organizations is what makes ESW unique. We collaborate with on-the-ground agencies and institutions to develop and employ solutions that are both locally defined and appropriate, as well as sustainable beyond ESW's presence.

From collaborating with Friends of Bosnia to teach youth practical software programming skills, to partnering with Agua Para El Pueblo to help build water purification treatment plants in Honduras, ESW volunteers are active in creating lasting solutions to meet global human needs.

Collegiate Chapter Projects

Our university chapters contribute significantly to our work in sustainability. They often provide the design research that summer volunteers carry out through the SEED Program, build their own sustainable development projects with international partners, and work to raise sustainability awareness in their university communities here in the United States.

In the fall and spring, ESW members can join project teams organized by their local collegiate chapters. Student members often earn undergraduate or research credit for their involvement on project teams. Professional members and faculty act as technical consultants.
